Context:
The purpose of Group Safety is to support a step change in business performance by developing processes, systems, and practices, including building organizational capability, to eliminate or effectively manage operational safety risks and exploit safety opportunities.

Purpose:
Facilitate delivery of best in class safety management and performance at our clients joint venture operations and capital growth projects, to minimise the risk of fatalities, serious injuries, and incidents while improving productivity

Typical Tasks:
  • Facilitate exchange and sharing of safety best practices, managements systems, and processes amongst our clients joint ventures and capital growth projects.
  • Establish leading and lagging safety performance indicators and monitoring and reporting regiments for joint ventures and capital growth projects, analyze safety performance, and advise on performance improvement opportunities.
  • Advise project managers on safety risks and opportunities during capital growth project toll-gate reviews.
  • Assess and analyse joint venture and capital growth project safety management systems, processes, and programs, including but not limited to contractor management, hazard identification, high risk activities, management of change, emergency preparedness, and safety leadership practices and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Facilitate, support, and verify implementation of safety improvements within joint venture operations and capital growth projects globally.
  • Identify and advise on best-in-class safety management programs, processes, and practices within and external to the mining industry.
  • Facilitate organizational learning and institutionalize change to position joint venture operations and capital growth projects as best-in-class with respect to safety management.
  • Assess, analyse, and provide expert advice on safety incentive and accountability schemes, including definition of leading and lagging indicators and motivating behaviours.
  • Facilitate and provide expert advice and support on hazard identification, risk management, workforce competency and capability assessments, and safety management procedures, inspections, and reporting.
  • Facilitate desk-top and on-site Safety compliance and management system reviews at joint venture operations and capital growth projects.
  • Coach and mentor joint venture and capital growth project liaisons, managers, and Safety personnel on safety best practices, emergent developments, improvement opportunities, and learnings.

Capability Required:
Formal qualifications:
  • An undergraduate qualification (Bachelors / Honours degree or equivalent) in Occupational Safety & Health or similar relevant technical discipline
  • A postgraduate qualification (Masters / Doctoral degree or equivalent) in Occupational Safety & Health, Construction or Engineering Management or similar relevant technical discipline OR a proven track record of extensive practical experience in a role and context of similar complexity

Role-specific knowledge:
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Safety management.
  • Expertise and proven track record developing and successfully implementation Safety Management Systems including contractor management programs.
  • Track record leading ideas generation, translation of these into practical initiatives with demonstrated success in Safety Management in a global / regional context.
  • Track record of acting as a company-wide coach, advisor and mentor in a technical discipline with change management expertise.
  • Track record of operational experience within a large global multi-commodity mining, manufacturing or related industry.
  • Demonstrated experience in a senior leadership role within a technical environment, including the coordination of knowledge sharing within a sub-discipline, managing workload and reviewing the work of others to ensure consistency with task requirements.
Safety Management:
  • Has provided consistent outstanding role model in relation to safety and risk management with a deep understanding of the importance of Safety.

Any other requirements to perform the work effectively?
  • Must be fluent in English. Additional languages (Spanish, Portuguese) are advantageous.
  • International travel is required.
  • Working at high altitude may be required.
  • Regularly working on site at Mine operations will be required. This may involve activities of a physical nature in a typical mine environment (for example noise, vibration, heat, small spaces, reduced visibility).
  • Ability to balance strategic thought with delivery of tangible business outcomes.
