Basketball Australia is the governing and controlling body for the sport of basketball in Australia. A not-for-profit business, Basketball Australia’s members are the eight state and territory basketball associations who we work closely with to grow the sport.

Basketball Australia manages our elite national teams (Boomers & Opals and Rollers & Gliders), our Centre of Excellence facility, elite competitions including Australia’s longest running women’s competition, the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL), major international competitions, annual national junior championship events as well as Australian basketball’s official junior game development program and other national programs and events.

Basketball is an Olympic and Paralympic sport and shares one of the highest international sporting profiles with the sport also ranked as the second most popular team sport in Australia with over 1 million people playing the game. Basketball Australia manages 22 national teams which compete in Olympic and Paralympic Games and FIBA World Championships.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Basketball Australia is seeking to appoint a part-time HR Manager to administer and manage key people and culture activities required for the organisation. A critical strategic role for the organisation, the HR Manager is responsible for establishing frameworks, templates and resources to help manage staff and drive forward a high-performance based culture. The role forms part of Basketball Australia’s Operations team and is integral to the achievement of the organisation’s future strategic objectives. You will come with a strong background and track record of achievement in human resources roles in a corporate setting or a similar industry. The role will suit a result-driven individual who is eager to implement change and lead the process internally.

Critical to the success of this role is exceptional human resources experience with a strong record of facilitating change towards an accountable and driven high performance approach. This role will suit candidates with strong leadership skills, preferably an independent critical thinker who can identify areas for improvement and implement solutions to deliver outcomes for the organisation. Your extensive experience will ensure that you can move quickly to affect change where needed. You will have many examples of how you are seen as a strong collaborator with excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer, the role is responsible for overseeing the following:

  • Recruitment activities - develop and lead our recruitment processes from start to finish including development of job descriptions, job ads and interview processes working with the necessary BA Executive where required.
  • Staff Performance Management - create and manage staff performance frameworks to drive incentives for BA Staff to perform at their optimum level.
  • Culture and Leadership - establishment of framework to engender a strong culture of high performance with related behaviours that can be modelled across the organisation.
  • HR Policies and Procedures - management and expansion of our existing HR policies and procedures to be in line with regulatory requirements as well as in line with the culture that BA wishes to develop.
  • Onboarding Program for new staff - review and develop onboarding programs for staff including training and induction registers.
  • Compliance and Workplace Health and Safety - leading the development of BA’s WHS activities and compliance with other regulatory requirements identified.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

You will be a proven performer with a strong track record in managing human resources activities. You will have experience in developing frameworks and processes from scratch or adapting existing activities to fit into your vision for how to best develop a high performing staff culture. Your strong communication and leadership skills will have been helpful for you in the past to engender support for your change agenda. Your experience will enable you to identify opportunities for improvement across the organisation and implement these quickly.

You will come with previous success at a senior level, ideally from a corporate background or from the sports, entertainment, and/or major events industry.

Most of all your experience means that you can be self-sufficient and not afraid to work at both a strategic and operational level to get things done for your areas of responsibilities.

Your role will be responsible for developing frameworks and structures to drive a high performance approach to staff and you will be required to champion that ethos across the organisation in a key leadership role.
