About the Opportunity
As the Employee Relations – Business Partner for the Maritime Australia business, you will be responsible for providing practical, strategic and commercial advice and solutions on a range of employee relations, industrial relations and employment legal issues to the business. You will be responsible for working with and supporting the People Business Partners and supporting actions required to embed the enterprise People strategy within the Maritime Australia business.

Reporting to the People Lead – Employee Relations, you will:
  • Act as subject matter expert on employee relations/industrial relations and employment legal matters, working to find solutions to complex employee/industrial relations issues
  • Partner with stakeholders across the relevant business in order to support/implement the delivery of business strategy in alignment with wider organisational ER/IR strategy
  • Support the People Business Partnering community to manage employment and industrial relations matters, including delivery of key transformational projects and in actively supporting negotiations and leading delivery of a new enterprise agreement in the current bargaining round
  • Provide high quality and practical advice, support and coaching to the People Business Partnering community and Line Managers across the business on performance management, investigations, disciplinary matters, reorganisations, terminations and other core business processes
  • With oversight from the People Lead – Employee Relations, manage and run employment litigation matters (eg: unfair dismissal, general protections and discrimination)
  • Independently work with and influence key stakeholders across all levels of the relevant business, particularly People Business Partners and Line Managers, as well as externally with trade unions, and external legal counsel/advisors
  • Contribute to the development of a high functioning team by coaching and guiding People Business Partners and People Leaders on complex decision-making in employee relations/industrial relations matters, to enable others within the business to deliver maximum results for the business
  • Contribute to the development of the BAE Systems Australia's employee relations/industrial relations strategy through the People Lead – Employee Relations, and be responsible for supporting deployment of the strategy within Maritime Australia
About you

As an ideal applicant for this opportunity, you'll have:
  • Significant experience employee relations/industrial relations matters and employment legal matters
  • Significant experience in enterprise bargaining process, including negotiating, drafting managing FWC approval process, responding to industrial action/bargaining disputes, and implementing negotiated agreements
  • Strong knowledge of employment and industrial relations laws, with extensive prior experience either as employee relations/industrial relations practitioner, in-house employment lawyer or as an employment lawyer in private practice
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, including building relationships and effectively influencing a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver business outcomes whilst maintaining key relationships
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to confidently present to large groups and to adapt your messaging to suit the relevant audience
  • An ability to balance conflicting priorities to deliver against customer and business requirements, with appropriate stakeholder management
  • An ability to work within an overall enterprise-level strategy, but also identify opportunities for improvement/change/new ways of working
Whilst not essential, ideally you will be a qualified lawyer holding a legal practicing certificate. Non-lawyers with significant experience will also be considered.
